The name Torrevieja literally means "Old Tower". It refers to an ancient coastal watchtower that once stood near today's harbour. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, several watchtowers were built along the Mediterranean coast to protect local communities from pirate attacks. The old tower that gave its name to the town became an important landmark for sailors and fishermen navigating this part of the Spanish coastline.
For many years the surrounding area remained a small settlement dedicated mainly to fishing and salt production. These songs, whose name comes directly from Havana, were brought back by sailors after crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
