Discover Torrevieja: Beaches, History and the Mediterranean Lifestyle We Love
If you are looking for sunshine, beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants and a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle, we would love to introduce you to Torrevieja. At Rosa Mediterranean Houses, we have been helping international buyers find their dream home on the Costa Blanca since 1989. Every day we have the pleasure of showing our clients why Torrevieja has become one of the most desirable places to live in Spain.
Whether you are planning your next holiday, searching for a second home or considering a permanent move to Spain, Torrevieja offers everything you need. Warm weather throughout the year, long sandy beaches, excellent healthcare, shopping centres, sports facilities and a welcoming international community make this city an exceptional place to enjoy life by the Mediterranean Sea.
A fascinating history shaped by the sea
Many visitors wonder where the name Torrevieja comes from. The answer takes us back several centuries. The city owes its name to an old coastal watchtower known as the Torre Vieja (Old Tower), built to protect this part of the Mediterranean coastline from pirate attacks. Around this tower, fishermen, sailors and salt workers gradually established a small settlement that would later become today's vibrant city.
The real development of Torrevieja began thanks to its famous salt lakes. The exceptional quality of the local salt made the harbour one of the most important export ports in the Mediterranean. Ships loaded with salt regularly sailed to destinations across Europe and overseas, bringing prosperity to the town and attracting merchants and new residents from many different regions.
In 1829, a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the original village. Rather than disappearing, Torrevieja was rebuilt with a modern layout and continued to grow rapidly during the nineteenth century. Today, it has become one of the most international cities on the Costa Blanca, where people from dozens of different countries have chosen to make their home.
The special connection between Torrevieja and Cuba
One of the most interesting chapters of Torrevieja's history is its close relationship with La Habana, Cuba. For many years, ships left the port carrying large quantities of salt to Cuba and returned with products from the Caribbean. Those long sea voyages created strong cultural ties that can still be felt today.
The famous Habaneras, traditional songs that originated in Havana, were brought back by sailors returning home. Over time these beautiful melodies became part of Torrevieja's cultural identity. Every summer the city hosts the internationally renowned International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest, welcoming choirs from around the world. It is one of the cultural events we always recommend to anyone visiting the city.
One of the best-known Habaneras includes the beautiful line: "Torrevieja is a mirror where Cuba sees itself." This simple phrase perfectly reflects the historic friendship between both shores of the Atlantic.
More than 300 days of sunshine every year
One of the reasons why so many of our clients choose Torrevieja is its outstanding climate. With more than 300 sunny days each year and mild temperatures even during winter, outdoor living becomes part of everyday life. Whether you enjoy walking along the seafront, cycling, golfing or simply relaxing on a terrace, the weather allows you to enjoy it almost every day of the year.
The Mediterranean Sea together with the famous salt lakes creates a unique microclimate that has attracted visitors and new residents from all over Europe for decades.
Beautiful beaches for every lifestyle
Torrevieja offers an impressive variety of beaches, each with its own personality. Playa del Cura is one of the city's most popular beaches, surrounded by cafés and restaurants. Playa de Los Locos is perfect for relaxing by the sea, while La Mata offers one of the longest sandy beaches on the Costa Blanca. Families often enjoy Los Náufragos, while nature lovers appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of Cala Ferris with its palm trees and crystal-clear waters.
If you dream of living only a few minutes from the sea, we invite you to discover our selection of properties in Torrevieja. We offer apartments, penthouses, villas, bungalows and carefully selected new developments to suit every lifestyle and budget.
The promenade and Mediterranean lifestyle
Whenever we show properties in Torrevieja, one place we always recommend visiting is Paseo Juan Aparicio. This beautiful promenade perfectly captures the Mediterranean way of life, with cafés, restaurants and spectacular sea views. A short walk away, the famous Dique de Levante extends into the sea, offering one of the best panoramic views of the harbour and coastline.
For us, this is what Torrevieja is all about: enjoying life outdoors, surrounded by sunshine, the sea and a welcoming atmosphere all year round.

A city that never stops living
One of the things we appreciate most about Torrevieja is that it is not only a summer destination. Life continues throughout the year. The streets remain lively, restaurants stay open, local markets welcome visitors every week, and the city offers activities for every generation. Whether you are visiting for a few days or planning to settle here permanently, you will always find something to enjoy.
Torrevieja combines the relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle with all the comforts of a modern European city. Healthcare centres, international schools, sports facilities, marinas, shopping areas and excellent road connections make everyday life easy and comfortable.
The famous markets of Torrevieja
If you enjoy local traditions, the weekly market is one of the highlights of the city. Hundreds of stalls offer fresh fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, clothing, flowers, leather goods and many regional products. It is one of the largest outdoor markets in the Alicante province and a wonderful place to experience authentic Spanish life.
Later in the day, many visitors head towards the seafront where the famous artisan market, often called the Hippie Market, brings Paseo Juan Aparicio to life. Handmade jewellery, paintings, leather crafts, souvenirs and unique gifts are displayed by local artisans while visitors enjoy the sea breeze and spectacular sunsets.
Every neighbourhood has its own personality
One of the reasons we enjoy working in Torrevieja is the diversity of its neighbourhoods. Each area offers a different lifestyle depending on what you are looking for.
Centro is ideal if you enjoy having everything within walking distance. Playa del Cura and Playa de Los Locos are perfect for those who dream of living close to the beach and the promenade. La Mata offers long sandy beaches and a more relaxed atmosphere, while Aguas Nuevas, Torreblanca and Nueva Torrevieja are popular residential areas with excellent services.
If you prefer quieter surroundings, areas such as Los Balcones, San Luis, El Chaparral or Acequión provide a wonderful balance between residential comfort and easy access to the city centre. Every client has different priorities, and that is why we always take the time to understand exactly what you are looking for.
Mediterranean cuisine and international flavours
Food lovers will quickly discover why Torrevieja is such a popular destination. Traditional Spanish restaurants serve excellent rice dishes, fresh seafood and Mediterranean specialities, while the city's international community has also brought outstanding Italian, Belgian, French, British, Scandinavian, Indian and Asian cuisine.
One of our favourite recommendations is simply enjoying lunch on a sunny terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. It is one of those everyday pleasures that quickly becomes part of life after moving here.
Shopping, entertainment and family life
Torrevieja offers excellent shopping opportunities thanks to Centro Comercial Habaneras, the nearby Ozone Leisure Centre, supermarkets, local boutiques and a wide variety of services. Families also enjoy water parks, sports centres, cycling routes, playgrounds and numerous activities organised throughout the year.
This combination of leisure, convenience and quality of life is one of the reasons why so many families decide to buy a property here rather than simply spending their holidays on the Costa Blanca.
Looking for even more peace and space?
Some of our clients love the lively atmosphere of Torrevieja, while others prefer a quieter residential environment surrounded by golf courses and green areas. If that sounds like you, we would also be delighted to introduce you to Orihuela Costa, located only a few minutes away.
